What is the difference between drinking Beer and Malt Liquor?

They both taste the same, but one is cheaper and packs more of a punch... So why does everyone make fun of Malt Liquor?|||If you're drinking beer that tastes like malt liquor, you're drinking the wrong kind of beer.

Malt liquor was a term developed when states had even stricter laws regarding alcohol contents in beer - at that time, anything over a certain percentage had to be labeled a malt liquor, rather than beer or lager.

If you're out to get drunk for cheap, then go right ahead with malt liquor - don't forget the paper bag.

If you want to drink something of quality, rather than quantity, check out some Craft Beers, particularly something local to where you live. Your local Better Beer Wine and Liquor store should have a nice selection.

But to answer your basic question, everyone makes fun of malt liquor because it's cheap, has little to no flavor (by style), and is only sold in 40 oz bottles that you're supposed to drink straight from.

|||I've never experienced a hangover like that of malt liquor. It felt like someone took a hammer and smashed my temple with it. That was the worst experience ever. I was drinking it last night and owww I just feel like crap.

|||The hangover...I heard that Malt Liquor give a hella hangover :0)|||I try not to make fun of malt liquor, what people drink is their choice. Instead of making fun, I simply try to educate about how vast the world of beer truly is.

While the average Bud/Miller/Coors will likely taste very similar to a malt liquor, there's a reason for this. Neither one is considered a quality beverage,

With everything from Stouts.. to Pale Ales.. to IPA's.. to Porters... to Lambics..... to Dopplebocks.. to Hefeweizen's and on and on and on, I firmly believe there is a 'better' beer out there for everyone.

Even the higher ABV of malt liquor is a moot point in terms of better beer, as there are countless beers with equal, if not higher ABV's. Belgian styles tend to be at least as strong and American brewers have been known to push the envelope to unheard of levels in terms of alcohol content.

Dogfish Head for example has the 120 Minute IPA at a whopping 21 percent.. try to find a malt liquor at that strength and they have World Wide Stout at 18 percent.

I'm not saying drink beers simply because of the higher alcohol contents, simply stressing that if the higher ABV is one of the the main motivating factors for drinking malt liquor, that's no longer a valid reason.

The best part? Not only are stronger imports and craft brews strong, but in general they tend to taste good and that's a huge advantage over malt liquor.

Now granted you might be happy sticking to malt liquor and again if that's your choice I can respect that. That being said it might not be a bad idea to at least try to venture out into the world of better beer, who knows you might like what you find.

Usually malt liquor comes in the 40oz. size, too - which is good for alcoholics who don't have a lot of money.|||white people drink the former.
